Overview
Below are screens showcasing the Nanoleaf Ltd. mobile app design evolution from 2016 to 2021. As a smart home lighting company, Nanoleaf introduced quarterly products and the accompanying mobile app would morph. These designs emerged from collaborative workshops and iterations.
My Contributions
I oversaw the entirety of the mobile app evolution leading.
This case study highlights experience in stakeholder management, workshop facilitation, mobile design (iOS and Android) and managing design feedback.

These are pictures of the various workshops I hosted throughout the years. Usually in a 5 day design sprint format that consisted of briefing, alignment on the goal, research, stakeholder interviews, expert interviews, Lightning Demos, collaborative sketching then testing
2016
First screenshot depicts the initial appearance of the Nanoleaf app when I first encountered it. Generally, the app did not adhere to standard mobile guidelines, making it challenging to navigate. Main revisions:
With a male centric user base the touch targets were too small. We increased it to 50px.
77% of users have never created a colour palette so palette creation could be hidden
RGB colour lighting were prioritized as practical lighting was ranked as less important
Lightened up the look and feel to match the overall brand
Navigation changed to prioritize product assortment
Added default RGB colour palettes so users didn’t have to create their own

2019
72% of users wanted just one blanket colour so we added the basic tab so users can easily trigger one colour
We extended the palette so it’s easier to see the colours
With the edition of “Rhythm Scenes” (a type of RGB colour animation) we added a icon to easily distinguish it from regular colour Scenes
2020
With the launch of the “Nanoleaf Essential” light bulbs which had different control requirements, it no longer made sense to swipe between products. The dashboard was changed to a multi device view and control view per product dropped to a lower level.
2021
The inclusion of room control allows for managing multiple devices within a single room.
